The spectacular $3.223 billion figure belongs to Alteogen and is contingent on a long list of conditions. The real news for Brederode lies elsewhere: Novartis is adding a transformation tool to several biologics franchises.

As of March 31, 2026, Brederode held a Novartis position worth €107.69 million, representing 7.1% of its listed portfolio and approximately 2.6% of its equity. This is the context in which the announced agreement with Alteogen should be viewed. Brederode is not investing directly in the Korean biotech company or in any single technology: the holding company owns a pharmaceutical company that has just acquired several options to make some of its medications easier to administer.

Converting an infusion into an injection

Many biologic drugs are administered by intravenous infusion. The product enters the bloodstream directly, often over a period of time that requires a wheelchair, healthcare staff, and hospital infrastructure. A subcutaneous injection can be faster and, depending on the drug and its approval, simpler to organize. The problem is physical: injecting a large volume under the skin is not natural.

ALT-B4, or berahaluronidase alfa, is a recombinant human hyaluronidase. It temporarily depolymerizes hyaluronan in the extracellular matrix to facilitate the dispersion and absorption of the treatment administered with it. In other words, the enzyme does not replace the biologic drug; it can open a new route of administration.

Novartis does not purchase a single, irrevocable license for a named product outright. The agreement gives it several options to obtain exclusive rights to multiple products. This structure sequences the risk: the group can assess the compatibility of the technology with different molecules before exercising each option and committing to the entire corresponding development.

The first potential benefit is human: reducing administration time and complexity. The second is operational: a shorter injection can increase the capacity of healthcare facilities. The third is competitive: when several treatments achieve similar clinical results, the method of administration can influence the choice between doctor and patient.

A fourth benefit is sometimes managing the lifecycle of a franchise. A new formulation can differentiate a product, maintain patient engagement, or support new specific patents. But this outcome is never automatic. Intellectual property protection depends on the molecules, jurisdictions, and patents granted; it cannot be inferred solely from Alteogen's press release. The agreement signals a strategic intent, not an extension of already secured exclusivity.

Discretion regarding the products also makes sense. Disclosing the selected molecules too early would inform competitors about Novartis' priorities. For investors, however, this confidentiality prevents any serious calculation. Without knowing the franchises, their sales, their patent expiration dates, development costs, and royalty rates, it's impossible to estimate a net present value.

Novartis combines internal research, indication extensions, and access to external platforms. Monitoring the investment thus allows us to understand what the holding company truly owns behind a €107.69 million line item: not just a drug portfolio, but an organization capable of purchasing technological modularity.

Caution remains twofold. On the one hand, the Novartis investment itself represented only about 2.6% of Brederode's equity as of March 31. On the other hand, the ALT-B4 agreement is only one element of Novartis. Even if highly successful, its effect would diffuse through these two layers before reaching the holding company's shareholder. This is one part of the thesis, not the entire thesis.
